Description
In US civilization:
This course centers on a specific region of the United States: the Intermountain West. Through the lens of regional history and using a diachronic approach, several key aspects of US civilization will be discussed, including Native American history, environmental protection (the concept of wilderness), the role of the federal government, and internal colonial dynamics. Focusing on the West allows students to review historical milestones in the construction of the nation, but also to address contemporary political and societal challenges, such as climate-change related issues, the exploitation of marginalized populations and spaces, the geographical polarization of political forces, and tensions between different levels of governance.
