BIO937 – High throughput in Biology

Prerequisites: Foundational knowledge in biology and chemistry.
Course outline: This course introduces modern high-throughput and high-content approaches used in biology and biomedical research. It covers quantitative biology, omics technologies (metabolomics, proteomics and genomics), advanced imaging approaches, screening technologies, and applications in biomedical research and drug discovery.
Format of the course: 3 h introductory session, 33 h of lectures, and 3 h of student oral presentations.
Format of exams: Continuous assessment (MCQs) and a final oral examination (in December).
Skills: Ability to understand, analyze and critically discuss advanced high-throughput and high-content technologies in biology and biomedical research; ability to evaluate scientific literature and discuss experimental strategies with experts; understanding of the strengths, limitations and applications of emerging technologies in the study of biological systems.
Details: This course consists of a series of lectures covering advanced technologies in high-throughput and high-content biology. Topics include quantitative approaches in biology, NMR-based metabolomics, proteomics, high-content microscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, flow cytometry, combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening, functional genomics approaches (including siRNA screening), cell arrays, biochips and lab-on-chip technologies, and high-throughput sequencing in human medical genetics. The course also includes discussions of scientific publications with lecturers and short oral presentations by students.

Pré-requis recommandés
Background in biochemistry, molecular biology and cellular biology. Knowledge in physiology, immunology and microbiology will be appreciated. Students with laboratory and/or practical skills will better understand technological benefits of the use of high throughput technologies in the lab work.
