Descriptif

Ce cours se compose de quatre modules

Cours de M. Mianowski :The course examines the functions and representations of the body in the context of postcolonial studies through the specific lens of the Magdalen Laundries scandal and the history of the mother and baby homes in Ireland. More particularly the course will examine the context in which the scandal emerged in the middle of the 1990s in Ireland. Students will be asked to read closely Dermot Bolger’s novel A Second Life : a Renewed Novel (2010) and question the links between the young Irish nation in the early years of the 20th century and the bodies of the mothers and babies hidden away and rendered invisible.  The aim of the course is utlimately to study the ways in which those secrets are revealed in Irish literature and the arts today.

Emotion and Affect in American Literature  (9 h N. Manning):This course will explore questions of feeling and emotion in American literature—such as emotional truth, excess, apathy, and affective norms—from the nineteenth century until today, especially in light of recent developments in affect theory.

The American War in Vietnam: The Changing History (9 h M. Foley) : 

In this short course, we will do our best to immerse ourselves in the history of the American

war in Vietnam.  Often called “America’s longest war,” the war was the second war of national liberation for a generation of Vietnamese, and just one more inamanycenturies’ long history of

conflicts with outside powers.  Between 1954 and 1975, the war took the lives of more than 3 million Vietnamese and more than 58,000 Americans.  It devastated and poisoned much of the Vietnamese landscape, drove millions of refugees from rural areas into urban centers, and ultimately resulted in unification of Vietnam under a triumphant communist government.  It also seriously damaged the United States’ image around the world.  On the American home front,

the war divided the American public as few events have since the Civil War, transformed American politics, and it is safe to say, left a lasting scar on the national psyche; in discourse over American foreign policy, for example, the “Vietnam Syndrome” still looms large.

At the same time, the memory and legacy of the Vietnam War remain fiercely contested.  But this is nothing new: the history of the American war in Vietnam has always been fiercely contested –by scholars, pundits, and the public.  Fiftieth anniversary commemorations have

only brought such lingering divisions over the history and memory of the war into sharper

relief. The point of this course is to analyze both scholarly and popular interpretations of the

war over recent decades, and unpack some of the most hotly-debated aspects of the war.

La tentation primitiviste (9 h S. Berthier-Foglar) : This course aims to discuss primitivist movements in the United States from Thoreau’s Walden Pond to Mabel Dodge Luhan’s intellectual salon in Taos, New Mexico, as well as its contemporary offshoots. It will analyze a wide array of discourses: urbanism/architecture, the gender/primitivist nexus, New Age religions and Native American world views.
