UE Anglais

The English class in M1 chemistry is designed to develop students’ scientific communication and critical
thinking skills. Students will be expected to understand documents, such as scientific publications,
presenting research related to their field of studies (chemistry) and produce written and spoken
analyses of them. The semester culminates with a group poster session during which students (in pairs)
are expected to explain a Masters-level chemistry theme to a variety of expert and non-expert
audiences clearly and professionally. The poster session constitutes a challenging and an authentic
communication activity that trains students for similar situations in their future academic and
professional careers.
Students will be required to recognize, understand and, where appropriate, reproduce the linguistic and
organizational features of scientific documents, including the IMRaD structure. Relevant linguistic
structures and vocabulary will be integrated and revised where necessary.
This course is evaluated through a combination of continuous assessments and a final exam (1 hour).
