Presentation
Course co-accredited by the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (Grenoble INP) and Université Grenoble Alpes
The master in Industrial engineering draws on the strength of the Grenoble cluster in the field of production systems, in both teaching (Grenoble INP School of Industrial Engineering and the PHITEM training and research unit) and research (including the G-SCOP 5272 joint research unit laboratory). In particular, it falls within the "Innovation in Markets" theme.
This master offers three programs
- Research-oriented programs : Sustainable produc development, Sustainable operations management
- Sustainable industrial engineering (SIE) : in English, international program
This master trains students in the field of industrial engineering and therefore leads to all the professions in this field: from product design through to organisation and management of production systems. By its nature, industrial engineering is aimed at all kinds of industrial or service sectors.
More specifically, this master encompasses an international vocational program, and three research programmes. The first, designed for foreign students, aims to train managers in the field of industrial engineering with a specialisation on sustainability issues relating to the product and its logistics chain. The other three programs are research-oriented and lead to careers in teaching and research (private or public) with, in particular, a target of 50% of students going on to doctoral studies. Other students tend to go into industry in France or in their countries of origin, in industrial engineering careers
- For Sustainable operations management program, in the supply chain : production, procurement, logistics engineer...
- For the Sustainable products development program, in product design careers : product engineer, calculation, simulation...
Skills
This master offers common skills on the fundamentals of industrial engineering. It trains advanced techniques of innovation and improvement of industrial performance concerning the product and its industrial organization. The 2 1st year programs are distinguished mainly by the language of instruction (100% in English for the international program and mainly in French for the other program) but allow to acquire substantially the same skills. Two UEs (in English) are also common.

Sustainable industrial engineering
Industry is of critical importance for the global economy. Industrial engineering is the branch of engineering that is concerned with the efficient production of industrial goods as affected by elements such as plant and procedural design, the management of materials and energy, and the integration of workers within the overall system. Sustainable industrial engineering addresses the issue of sustainability of industry in three ways : from an environmental point of view, from a social and societal point of view, from an economical point of view.
Sustainable industrial engineering has myriads of application fields since it encompasses the whole value chain and lifecycle of products : from the development of new and innovative machines, products-services to the market and recyclability.
Sustainable operations management 2nd year
This Master's program is meant to train professional experts in Sustainable Industrial Engineering, able to deploy skills in a global industrial environment and face the future challenges of the transitions (ecological, digital, societal).
Sustainable Industrial Engineering has myriads of application fields since it encompasses the whole value chain and lifecycle of products: from the development of new and innovative products and services, to the end of life of the systems.
The specialization in sustainable product development occurs in year 2.
The sustainable operational management course investigates the key domains that will give the students tools to deal with challenges related to the strong environmental impact of human activities, and provides a systemic and interdisciplinary understanding of the situation. Major topics are sustainable supply chain management, data analytics, operational excellence, socio-economic aspects of sustainability for industry 4.0. There is a significant amount of research to be carried out still and this major offers the opportunity to follow a research-oriented path that opens up to a doctoral program. The Industrial path allows to directly claim for a job in industry. Our lectures are at the cutting edge of knowledge and involve teachers from our affiliated research laboratories, such as G-SCOP for industrial engineering (both supply chain and product development), CERAG for management sciences, PACT for sociology and GAEL for industrial economics.
You can learn more about the program on the Grenoble INP website.
Sustainable product development 2nd year
This Master's program is meant to train professional experts in Sustainable Industrial Engineering, able to deploy skills in a global industrial environment and face the future challenges of the transitions (ecological, digital, societal).
Sustainable Industrial Engineering has myriads of application fields since it encompasses the whole value chain and lifecycle of products: from the development of new and innovative products and services, to the end of life of the systems.
The specialization in sustainable product development occurs in year 2.
The sustainable development of industrial products course studies the key areas that will give students the tools to face the challenges related to the strong environmental impact of human activities, especially the industrial sector, and provide a systemic and interdisciplinary understanding of the situation. The main topics are sustainable design, data analysis, innovation, advanced manufacturing, socio-economic aspects of sustainability for Industry 4.0.
The Sustainable Product Development major offers students the opportunity to specialize in research if they then wish to pursue a doctorate. Students also have the possibility of choosing an "industrial" path if they wish to apply directly in industry after a master's degree.
Our teachings are at the cutting edge of knowledge and involve teachers from our affiliated research laboratories, such as G-SCOP for industrial engineering (both supply chain and product development), CERAG for management, PACTE for sociology and GAEL for industrial economics.

Sustainable Printed and Integrated Electronics program
The Master’s program in Sustainable Printed and Integrated Electronics (Master’s Degree, One Year Graduate Program) has been developed to train specialists in the field of printed electronics and equip them with the skills needed to design, develop and add new functionalities to 2D and 3D objects using innovative printing processes.
The program, which combines materials science, electronics and sustainable innovation, will enable graduates to meet the challenges involved in 2D/3D object functionalization and the eco-design of electronic devices. The skills they acquire will allow connected objects to be manufactured at a lower cost and using fewer resources.
This Master’s program is open to students who have completed at least 4 years of science-based higher education or 1 year of graduate studies (the equivalent of 240 ECTS credits) in France or abroad. It forms part of the Grenoble INP – Génie Industriel’s Industrial Engineering Master’s program and leads to an official qualification.
Students can obtain scholarships, either in France or in their home country, to cover all or part of the enrolment fee as well as the costs linked to the course. This program also includes a final-year internship lasting 5-6 months, either in a company or in a laboratory, which pays around €600 a month if it takes place in France.
Training in collaboration with:
Grenoble INP – Génie Industriel; Laboratory of Process Engineering for Biorefinery, Biobased Materials and Functional Printing (LGP2); Tec21 Laboratory of Excellence; Carnot Polynat Institute; Université Grenoble Alpes IDEX (Excellence Initiative)

Additional information
This multidisciplinary master primarily covers the strategic research themes defined by two of the site's research clusters: MSTIC (Mathematics, Information & Communication Science and Technologies) and PEM (Physics, Engineering, Materials). Note that the Industrial Innovation Programme is also supported by the laboratories of the SHS1 research cluster (the PACTE, GAEL and CERAG joint research units)
Training co-accredited by Institut polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP) and Université Grenoble Alpes. This partnership will result in particular in cross-course offerings for our students and this in particular with :
- These masters are complementary in the sense that they do not address the same public (SPI-STIC for industrial engineering) and moreover the industrial engineering master has clearly for 3 of these courses a research vocation
- For the international journey, we make significant use of professionals most often partners of the school: ST Microelectronics, Caterpillar, HP, CEA-INES, Schneider Electric, IDARED, the General Council of Isère, A Raymond, E2V, ...
- To this, it is necessary to add the various interventions in the other optional courses, most often occasional seminars within the framework of the relations of the research laboratories with the invited companies
