Descriptif

Content of the course

This course is dedicated to the analysis and the understanding of gender inequalities, in relation to their treatment through economic and social policies. The course rests on the knowledge and the tools of economics and sociology. As it will be explained in the course in more details, gender has three possible meanings: (1) a mere statistical variable; (2) a key concept to capture economic and social phenomena; and (3) a societal system (in its more critical meaning). Although we will use the three meanings of gender in the course, we will refer mainly to (2) and (3).

Likewise, it is certain that gender inequalities cover a wide range of topics. Therefore, it is impossible to grapple with all of them. But inequalities overlap and are intricated actually. This is why the course will focus on the following types of inequalities, whose study will enable the students to understand the extent to which inequalities are intricated:

(1) Gender inequality in the family setting

(2) Gender inequality in the workplace

(3) Gender inequality and health

(4) Gender inequality in education

(5) Gender inequality and development

(6) Gender inequality in sport

(7) Gender inequality and its treatment through economic and social policies

The main objective of the course is to emphasize the relevance of the concept of gender to deal with the issue of economic and social policies implementation related to the treatment of inequalities.

Likewise, the course also aims to foster students' skills in English (Oral + written English).
