The first part of this course covers basic concepts of nuclear physics. After an introduction on the structure of the nucleus, we will address the laws of nuclear decay and reactions. The processes of alpha, beta and gamma decay will be described in detail, along with fission. We will end with a presentation of nuclear models such as the nuclear shell model. Subsequently, basic concepts of particle physics, such as the classification of elementary particles and fundamental interactions, will be addressed through several representative examples.
