Course outline

This module provides an integrated view of biology by studying an anti-oxidative enzyme (of your choice) and its role in various physiological functions. Students develop a genetic approach (physiological characterization of mutants in S. cerevisiae), a biochemical approach (characterization of an isoform of a purified enzyme) and a cell biology approach (study of the cellular localization, expression and function of the enzyme in fibroblast cell lines). The experiments will be performed during 3 weeks of practicals. The main objective of this module is to learn to design, implement and interpret experiments. It uses your reason, analysis, adaptation and initiative skills. The goal is not to illustrate a scientific topic in particular, but to insist on learning a method that is common to all scientists in biology, whatever their interests.
