Descriptif

The course is organized into two main sections. In the first part are presented all the fundamental concepts of fault and earthquake physics as observed through seismological and geodetical observations. In particular we  introduce several concepts such as seismic cycle, deformation, seismic waves, stress drop, seimic moment, magnitude scales, and the two earthquake statistical laws: Gutenberg-Richter and Omori. This part of the class is evaluated in the form of an oral examination of the students understanding of “what is an earthquake”.  

In the second part of the course, the objective is to provide the student with vocabulary and tools to download relevant seismic data to be able to characterize earthquakes or study earth structure. This part is organized into two lectures followed by lab work, based on python programming. At the end of this part of the course, the student will be able to find, within the worldwide system of seismic data distribution, the adequate data to analyse earthquakes and earth structure and download the data for further anlaysis. This part of the course is evaluated in the form of a report where the students identify an earthquake and its characteristics, and download and plot the observational data.
