Parcours Computational Mathematics of erasmus mundus Bio-Health Computing (CM-BHC)

Présentation et objectifs

Growing barriers between clinical and basic research, along with the ever increasing complexities involved in conducting health research, are making it more and more difficult to translate new knowledge to the bedside – and back again to the bench. Considering that a broad re-engineering effort is needed to catalyze worldwide innovation in Clinical and Life Sciences, the BioHealth Computing Consortium (BioHC Consortium) is linking together Public Universities, University Hospitals, Bioindustry Parks and Private Companies, to speed laboratory discoveries into solutions for patients. This unique network of European organizations distributed over 13 centers located in Europe and Asia aims to enhance the efficiency and quality of clinical and translational innovation by transforming the research and training environment in the field of public health. For this purpose, the BioHC Consortium is proposing: (i) a one year Master Courses programme; and (ii) a 3-4 years Ph.D. programme.

A highly selective Master Courses. The BioHC Master Courses is open to well motivated students who have completed one year MSc course (240 ECTS), or equivalent degree in the fields of: Clinical Research, Nano/Molecular Biotechnology, Environmental & Animal Health, and Computational Mathematics. The BioHC Master Courses programme is organized in 2 semesters followed at two different Partner Universities, that will be both in charge of awarding credits (30:30 ECTS), and two Master degrees. Each year, the courses start by a Summer School gathering all the students in the BioPark of Archamps-Genève Technopole. During the first semester, students take Advanced Courses in scientific fields depending on their scientific background. The second semester is dedicated to a seven months Joint Research Project.

A Joint Doctorate Programme. The BioHC Joint Doctorate is a 3-4 year PhD program open to well brilliant and motivated Doctoral candidates who have completed a MSc courses (or equivalent degree, 300 ECTS) in one of the previous fields of interest, and who have good knowledge in English (TOEFL / demonstrated competence). The BioHC Joint Doctorate meet the specifications of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate program (EMJD): (i) joint doctoral dissertation supervised by two Principal Investigators from two Partner Institutions; (ii) involving a mobility path between at least the two Partner Institutions; (iii) and giving rise to double degree after defense at one of the two universities of attachment, according to the national regulations for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation. Participating Doctoral candidates have to choose from a broad selection of research topics and participate in cutting edge research. Doctoral candidates are required to act as investigating fellows in at least one company. We recommend that Doctoral candidates complete this requirement by the end of their second year if possible.

Graduates achieving BioHC MSc and/or PhD programme will be in a position to initiate successful professional research careers in Clinical and Life Sciences in Higher Education Institutions, Research Insitutes, Industries’ R&D Department or Policy-Making Institutions. From the above it follows that a Joint MSc and/or PhD programmes bring a number of important advantages to the candidate for his/her future career:

  • international work experience, exposure to different working cultures
  • opportunity to exploit and learn from a larger pool of competences and facilities
  • professional contacts in several countries and laboratories
  • joint/double diploma

Atouts de la formation

Le parcours Computational Mathematics of Erasmus Mundus Bio-Health Computing se caractérise par une alternance du lieu géographique des semestres une année sur deux.

En dehors de l'UE Integration Period du semestre 9 qui est obligatoire et se passe à Archamps toutes les années, lorsque les autres enseignements du semestre 9 ont lieu à Grenoble (2016-2017), le semestre 10 se déroule à Barcelone. Et inversement.

Lorsque le semestre 9 se passe à Barcelone, les enseignements proposés sont :

- Simulation methods
- Stochastic Calculus
