Use light to investigate the matter, with the description of useful applications in biology, chemistry or earth sciences.   
Apply fundamental principles to predict the behavior of a system. Acquire basic concepts that are necessary for the understanding of essential phenomena in a variety of scientific domains.


Maths: basics in scientific calculus (know how to manipulate fractions, powers of 10, unit changes), algebraic quantities, vectors, trigonometry.

Physics: basics in geometrical optics and in measurement (S-SVT, STL-PC programs of the last year of high school).

Compétences visées

Principles of geometrical optics (refraction, lenses, associations) and wave optics (diffraction, polarization)  applied to practical instrumental problems in the area of imaging (vision, sensors, microscopes) and of polarimetry.
- Analysis of a practical situation with a small number of fundamental principles.
- Extraction of precise numerical values or order of magnitudes from a literal equation or from a graph. Know how to adapt units to orders of magnitude and usage, as well as the significant figures in relation to the desired precision.
- Work out an experimental approach to do a measurement or to validate a model.
- Achieve an experimental set-up so as to do measurements and to exploit them in agreement with the expected precision.
-Know how to write up experimental results in a laboratory notebook or in a synthetic scientific report)
