Descriptif
The objective of this class is to acquire the concepts that allow to understand in a simplified version the electrical and transport phenomena important in the life sciences. The course is divided in 2 parts.
1. Basic electrostatic concepts (electrical force, electrical field, electrical potential, energy between two systems, electrical potential) and their application in tutorials to biological or chemical systems (influence on the conformation of a molecule, electrical dipoles, study of intermolecular forces)
2. Basic concepts of charge transport in a homogeneous electrical field (limiting rates) and diffusion (no Drude formula). The goal here is to understand an electrophoresis experiment (displacement of proteins and spreading).
Pré-requis
Maths: Manipulation of vectors - Physics: equation of motion
Compétences visées
Competences in physics but also transverse competences through problem solving approaches and particular scientific approaches.
- Know how to use vectors to model a problem in which forces play a role. Spread this competence to other vector models used in physics (field vectors more specifically)
- Master electrostatics concepts (force, field, potential) and primary manipulations of the relation between the field and the potential under study (exprimental approach during practicals)
- Know basic concepts in the field of diffusion and transport
- Transverse competences: know how to write a lab report (scientifc report with introduction, materials and methods, raw data, analysis, discussion and conclusion)
