UE Geomechanics in reservoir and basin systems



This course covers the state of the art of the various tools used for studying conventional and non-conventional resources. Students will learn how to complete seismic interpretation processes. They will gain an introduction to the use of professional software systems for processing, visualising and interpreting massive seismic data volumes using attributes, neural networks and modern visualisation techniques such as RGB-blending or volume rendering. As the course is mainly devoted to the analysis of seismic profiles and seismic data cubes, it will begin by covering the basic concepts of the Earth in 2D and 3D and the techniques for collecting and processing marine seismic data. Seismic attributes will then be introduced as auxiliary quantities extracted from seismic reflection data, either in their raw form or at the different data-processing stages. These attributes are essentially used to estimate the petrophysical properties of geological formations, facilitate the detection of faults and reservoirs filled with liquid, filter the original seismic data, or quantify small changes in the mean properties over time. In turn, these operations are designed to improve the geological interpretation of seismic data, in order to assist with exploitation of the planning reservoir or assess the geomechanical behaviour of underground storage sites.

During this course, various geochemical methods (for example using oligo-elements, stable isotopes, radiogenic isotopes, rare gases) and other analytical approaches in oil exploration will also be presented. Students will be able to interpret geochemical analyses of hydrocarbons (maturity, environmental deposits, oil or gas?) and estimate the quality and volume of hydrocarbons from a log. In addition, thanks to the involvement of scientific experts, they will gain a general understanding of the available stocks and other innovative, emerging, renewable sources of energy/resources (for example: shale gas, gas hydrates, CO2, geothermal energy, etc.).
